The Adelanto Group: Building Opportunity Through Resilience and Purpose
The Adelanto Group, Inc. (AGI) is a thriving construction firm with more than 15 years of industry experience and a story rooted in resilience, strategic growth, and community impact.
AGI’s journey began during the 2008 financial crisis. At the time, the company’s founder was a senior project manager for a major home improvement retailer, overseeing the construction of multiple stores across the Western United States. When the recession struck, widespread layoffs brought uncertainty and forced a pivotal career decision.
Rather than retreat, the founder took a calculated risk; mortgaging his home to launch a business focused on flipping residential properties in the foreclosure market. That decision laid the foundation for what would become a dynamic and respected construction company. Over time, AGI expanded beyond residential projects into ground-up construction and commercial work, earning a strong reputation for quality, reliability, and performance.
Today, AGI partners with more than seven joint-venture firms representing a wide range of disadvantaged business groups. These partnerships span heavy civil construction, environmental services, design-build projects, roofing, and include participation in a Mentor-Protégé Program with Near-Cal, a well-established Southern California commercial contractor. These collaborations reflect AGI’s commitment to inclusion, capacity building, and industry advancement.
The next chapter of AGI’s story began eight years ago during a breakfast conversation in Hawaii with long-time family friends who are Native Hawaiian. That discussion centered on the possibility of pursuing SBA 8(a) certification as a tribal entity. What began as a conversation evolved into a shared vision: leveraging business success to create meaningful opportunities for Native Hawaiian communities. AGI’s long-term goals include supporting education, housing stability, and food security—causes deeply connected to its mission.
Throughout its federal contracting journey, AGI has received critical support from the San Diego, Orange, Imperial APEX Accelerator. APEX advisors assisted AGI with refining its SAM.gov registration, developing a strong capabilities statement, and navigating key areas such as bonding, accounting, legal resources, and strategic partnerships. Through APEX-hosted outreach events and conferences, AGI expanded its network and strengthened relationships with government and industry stakeholders.
AGI extends special thanks to Tanya Counts, whose dedication and guidance played a key role in helping the company overcome challenges and advance its federal contracting readiness.
From modest beginnings during one of the nation’s toughest economic periods to becoming a respected construction partner, The Adelanto Group exemplifies resilience, innovation, and purpose. Its story is not only about building structures, it is about building communities and creating lasting opportunities for future generations.
